Runner-up Massey improves at Trotter

KEVIN Toher (Newquay Road Runners) retained his title with ease in the annual Tywardreath Trotter race last Saturday evening, winning the seven mile multi terrain event by a mammouth five minute 18 second margin.

Gareth Massey (Cornwall Athletic Club) finished second, moving up from fifth place in the 2009 race.

As usual this event, part of the Tywardreath Summer Fete celebrations, attracted almost 170 runners, including many runners on holiday, with one of the visitors, Russell Forsbrook (Cheltenham Harriers), finishing third, ahead of local boy Dan Alsop (St Austell Running Club).

Sam Smith (Plymouth 24) sneaked across the Tamar and proved too good for her Cornish challengers, winning the Ladies race and finishing 19th overall, 40 seconds clear of last year’s winner, Sharon Dawe (East Cornwall Harriers), who was 41 seconds ahead of third placed Mount’s Bay Harrier Rachel Tresidder.

On their home patch St Austell Running Club made it a team double, with Dan Alsop (4th), Duncan Oakes (6th), Donald MacLaren (11th) and Andy Trudgian (12th) winning the Men’s race comfortably, with Liz Lusty (8th), Catheryn Camborieux (9th) , Sue Mellis (17th) and Sarah Bazely (24th) clearly determined to equal the performance of their male counterparts.
