Marlwood School may benefit from new sports facility

Marlwood School in Alveston is has submitted plans for a new all weather pitch with additional athletics facilities. The current plans (if realised) will provide a full sized pitch that can be divided into three smaller pitches if necessary.

The goal of the new £660,000 sports facility is to improve the sporting capacity of the secondary school, a goal that will be helped with the proposed installation of floodlighting to allow local community groups and sports clubs to use the facility at night.

Keith Geary, head teacher of Marlwood school, said:

"The all weather pitch is an exciting and eagerly anticipated development and will improve the learning opportunities for our students. In addition it will be a valuable asset for use by the local community.

"An initial small project team has been established to scope out the project and hold preliminary discussions focussing on available pitch surface, sizes, types of fencing, anticipated lighting requirements, maintenance regimes and of course our envisaged use of the new facility.

"We are delighted that this new facility is shortly to become a reality. Our students, and the wider community, will benefit massively."

It is hoped that the application for the facility will be approved of quickly and that it will be ready for use by the start of the next school year in September.

Speaking as an ex-pupil, I was aware that while there is a large amount of field space, little of it is developed for proper sports (with the hockey fields and tennis courts being major exceptions when I was there). This means that new facilities should be a great benefit for a school with lots of potential to expand it's sporting capabilities.
