Thornbury Pubs - A History

The latest in an ever expanding library of history books about Thornbury, Thornbury Pubs by George Ford was released this week.
Over the years Thornbury High Street has contained a large number of pubs, many of which are nearly unrecognisable in their present forms. Now with George Ford's new Thornbury Pubs the history of many of these drinking establishments can be brought to light, that, and the drinking culture that has existed from past to present in our society.
George's work is very comprehensive, and the start of the book provides a very good introduction to our local history, making the rest of the book easily understandable and putting the position of pubs, inns, drinking houses etc. into context.
Still, what will be most interesting to people reading this book is the history of their own local, perhaps explaining why the largest section of the book is given over to 'present day pubs'. In this section readers will find sub-sections dedicated to their own favourites, all of which paint a picture of how the pub fitted into Thornbury's drinking scene as a whole.
If you're interested in picking up a copy of Thornbury Pubs then they're available from the Thornbury Museum Shop right now, and if you're really keen then George should be available for a small signing session in the near future (I was lucky enough to get one earlier this week). In the meantime, happy drinking!
