Thornbury People and Thornbury Museum would like
-
Part of the Roman Coin Hoard
to announce that we are organising an
exciting story competition for schoolchildren based on the museum’s Thornbury
Roman Coin Hoard exhibition.
Children are invited to write a
story around the mystery of the Thornbury Roman Coin Hoard. Who might have
hoarded them? Why were they buried? And why did no-one go back for them? The
hoard consists of a cache of more than 11 thousand small Roman coins found in a
garden in Thornbury in 2004. Most of the coins are in Bristol City Museum but about 200 are on display in
Thornbury and District Museum accompanied by large information
panels and other Roman finds.
The competition gives an
opportunity to research the lives of the people living here at the time of the
Romans and particularly the coins of the time, to appreciate the importance of
local history and archaeology and to think creatively about the questions posed
by the discovery, so much later, of so many coins together.
The museum always welcomes children
accompanied by parents or other adults. It can also arrange special opening for
small groups or stay open after the normal closing time of 4pm if requested in
advance ( please email enquiries@thornburymuseum.org.uk if you are interested
in doing this).
The competition will be
running from today until it's closing date at 5.00 pm on 16th April. The judging and
awarding of prizes will take place on 8th May.
For more information about the competition you can email
thornbury@the localpeople.co.uk (please enter 'Roman Coin Story' in the subject
field).

Good luck!
