How many local residents have heard about the latest proposals to tackle dangerous dog breeds? Apparently 100 people are admitted to hospital every week because of dog attacks, so they government believes they need greater controls over pet ownership in the UK.

As part of the proposed plans our dogs are supposed to be  micro-chipped and insured against any damage or injuries they might cause. This would be an amendment of the 1991 Dangerous Dogs act (which currently bans the ownership of several types of dog, including pit bull terriers) and enables the police to destroy a dog of any breed if it could not longer be controlled in a public space.

I've heard a lot about status dogs and the way some animals may be used to intimidate people, but do you think the problem is so great that these reforms should be put in place? I have not heard of Thornbury having a problem with dogs (at least not in a dangerous sense) but I would be interested to hear if local people think this initiative would be at all helpful.

Perhaps I am just lucky to be able to walk our dog without getting hassle from other dog owners and their pets. Has anyone had a different experience to this though?
