Tomorrow at St Mary’s Church Hall in Thornbury will be the host to a talk on the Luftwaffe’s attacks on the aircraft industry in South Gloucestershire during the Second World War.

The illustrated talk, organised by Thornbury Local History and Archaeology Society, will be given by local historian John Penny, the co-founder of the Fishponds Local History Society and the writer of many published works on different aspects of Bristol’s history - these include ‘Bristol at Work’ and ‘Bristol at War’.

When the Luftwaffe began to attack the British mainland after France’s capitulation in 1940, Bristol was one of the first cities to be targeted by the German bombers. The upcoming talk will describe how attacks made against the Aircraft Industry in South Gloucestershire affected the local populace some seventy years ago.

Thornbury Local History and Archaeology Society hold their meetings on the second Tuesday of every month and details of their programme are available from the library or the town hall. This month’s talk will begin at 7.30pm and a charge of £2.50 will be made to non-members.

Don’t forget that the next event to be held by the Society will be on October the 13th, where a demonstration of basket weaving will be given by Jenny Humphries.
