A GREENFIELD site east of Thornbury is being targeted by a developer which wants to build 500 new homes on land off Morton Way.

Planning consultant Barton Willmore has revealed the scheme to local councillors, who said they were “dismayed” at the proposal and have refused to meet the firm in private, telling it all discussions should be in public. The four councillors, who represent the town on South Gloucestershire Council, also asked for the information they were sent to be made available to Thornbury Town Council so it could debate it at its next meeting in September.

The area concerned is a patch of arable and pasture land near the Grovesend roundabout. No planning application has been produced, but it is understood developers also have options to build on two other plots along Morton Way Town leaders would prefer a 500-home development at Park Farm, to the north of the town.

Councillor Clare Fardell said: “We think it is very important for the public to know about this bid by developers and any other bids which may be in the pipeline.

“Thornbury councillors have made it very clear that they support the building of only 500 new houses and flats and that their preferred location is the Park Farm site.”

Barton Willmore partner Simon Prescott said: “We wrote to the four councillors and other officers to specifically discuss the way forward for the project at Morton Way South and to ask for their views on the most appropriate way to consult with the public. The representations we submitted to the council advocate public consultation before we further develop more detailed proposals, including a master plan.”

I have also contacted the companies concerned and I am awaiting a response, I will add the responses here once I receive them, Does anyone have any further questions that they would like me to put to them concerning this?

That’s a really good point, I have a feeling that this could soon end in being both! With the government offer to match the council tax income for each new home that is granted planning permission it does raise the question that could the planners start becoming money hungry?

To be fair the planners seem to be on the ball and also I think do a good job in accessing the applications, But it will make people think..

Is this going to be an either/or or could we end up with both developments? there is opposition to Park Farm due to 'inadequate consultation with the public' so should we be eventually asked to choose? Or is the Park Farm timescale already set up?
