Supporters of a South Gloucestershire chapel will need to be in good voice for a marathon fundraising challenge.

A 12-hour sponsored hymn-athon has been organised in Oldbury-on-Severn, near Thornbury, with volunteers needed to drop in and sing along with hymns ancient and modern.

The event takes place tomorrow in the Methodist Chapel from 8am to 8pm.

Organiser Tessa Sullivan, 65, said: "The chapel is a very important building within the community, not just for religious services but for plenty of other village activities. It is used a lot so we always need money to pay for its maintenance.

"It's been there for about 100 years and has always been a place of worship. About 20 years ago it became quite dilapidated but some very dedicated people helped restore it and we continue to raise money for its upkeep."

The chapel is used for events ranging from keep-fit classes to lunch clubs for the elderly, as well as events for village youngsters.

Those joining in will be asked to pay £2 for every half hour.
