Steve Alexander produced an outstanding display in Thornbury Town's 3-2 victory over Yate Town Reserves in the Gloucestershire County League.

The striker set up one goal in the opening minutes and bagged one himself late in the first half.

He was a constant threat in front of goal, linking up well with his team-mates.

Alexander, a popular figure among his team-mates, started the game in lively fashion.

A slick one-two played with Jack Barnes allowed the latter to drive into the penalty box and open the scoring.

On the stroke of half- time, with the score at 1-1, an Ashley Lloyd corner was not cleared by the Yate defence and the ball fell to Alexander, who slotted home coolly from close range, taking his tally for the season to 11 and giving his team the lead at the break.

In the second half, Alexander held the ball up well, retaining possession for his team, which proved vital in the dying stages of the game with the score at 3-2.

Thornbury manager Dave Lippiatt said: "Steve played extremely well. He scored a crucial goal for us and ran the show."

Alexander has his sights set on promotion, saying: "We made a good start and pushed on. I think we have a good chance of promotion now and I really hope we can carry on performing well for the rest of the season.
