Back in February residents in Thornbury were mystified when their market town suddenly became the chosen venue for coach loads of Leeds United football supporters when their team were playing away to Bristol City.

However today it all happened again but this time Thornbury town centre was invaded by a couple of coach loads of Sheffield Wednesday football supporters following their away match against Bristol Rovers today.

When I was on my way to the town earlier today I noticed a number of coaches that were parked up near the Black Horse, once I parked in the Rock Street car park I then noticed a group of men walking towards me wearing Sheffield Wednesday football shirts, at first I thought nothing of it but on my way down towards Clinton Cards the noise was getting louder, the chanting became more and more noticeable. Once I entered on to the High Street I was surrounded by people wearing blue and white striped football shirts.

I was actually on my way to the White Lions family fun day event with the children and although the pub was very busy the atmosphere was fun and friendly, a couple of the supporters even took advantage of the children's face painter and had their faces painted in blue and white stripes.

The White Lion and The Knot of Rope seemed to be the popular venues for the supporters however the White Lion seemed to attract the majority of them.

One local drinker in the White Lion said “It's nice to see that people are starting to notice Thornbury on the map, we are seeing more and more groups coming to the town for the day”

Another local said “everyone is in good spirits, yes some of them are loud but its a nice day and there have came all this way for some fun”

One Sheffield Wednesday supporter dressed all in blue said “the people of Thornbury have been welcoming and friendly, no one has come down for any trouble, we just want to have a laugh and a few drinks” he continued by saying “me and the boys are having a good time the Lion is full of a good football atmosphere and we are being treated well, spot on!”

Prior to match kick off there were signs of a police presence in the form of a police riot van circulating the pubs in the area, however there were no signs of any trouble and as far as I can tell the day went well with no arrests being made.

The score was 1-1

There was a very large group that got off a coach that was parked in Bath Road. They all came across the main road chanting football songs. Very rowdy but wouldnt call them hooligans, cant say what their behaviour was like after they had visited the pubs though! Some people in the market did feel uneasy with them in the town and couldnt believe why Thornbury always seems to be used as a 'holding pen' for football fans on their way to Bristol?
