It's not every day that someone with a full (yea, luxuriant) head of hair sacrifices it in aid of charity.
But that's what Darren Morrissey did recently to support Myeloma UK. Here is a video of the event showing just how quickly you can get bald in a good cause:

In conjunction with another MyelomaUk sponsored event, Darren and his partner Karen raised almost £1500 towards research for a cure.
Never heard of Myeloma? You're not alone. 95% of the population don't know that Myeloma is a bone marrow cancer affecting plasma cells which form part of your immune system. Instead of producing antibodies that fight infection, abnormal cells produce a useless paraprotein into the blood. The affected cells divide and expand within the bone marrow and so affects all the major bones of the body.
Common effects are bone pain and fractures (as the bone is eaten away), tiredness due to anaemia, frequent infections, kidney damage and hypercalcaemia (build up of calcium in the blood that affects the organs).
Although 'uncommon', some 4000 people a year are diagnosed with myeloma. It is largely a disease affecting the elderly though younger patients are being increasingly diagnosed. there is no cure as yet, though there are several effective treatments that can put it into remission for years.
MyelomaUK provides support to patients, funds research and seeks to raise awareness of this disease. If you would like to know more they have an informative website: tinyurl.com/ybjrje9
