My Dear Mum,... is the story of children evacuated from the Essex coast to Thornbury ... and of the Thornbury they would have found. Some very familiar Thornbury buildings were put to quite different uses in wartime. Come and find out more! If you were here then, we want your memories too! Have we got it right? Can you add anything to what we know? Come in and tell us what you remember.
As I am not a native Thornburian, I did wonder if this would hold much interest for me, but it is fascinating. There are dozensof documents ranging from the school register in 1939, showing enrollments from far away to, to childrens letters home which are very evocative. Accompanying this is wartime memorabilia such as ARP instructions, photos of the time and details of which units were billeted where in town. Well worth a visit.
