DI Jill Kells said: "It seems the girls were drinking alcohol and although they have been interviewed by specially-trained officers we don't currently have a clear picture of what has happened.
"One of the girls went home, while the other was found in the park by her parents.
"We believe they had been speaking with four boys aged 16 or 17 during the day and I would ask those boys or anyone else who was in the park on Monday to contact detectives at Staple Hill police station on 0845 456 7000. Alternatively call the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111. They never ask your name or trace your call."
Officers have carried out a thorough search of the park and surrounding area, and house-to-house and other enquiries continue.
The park has now been reopened.
Anyone who may be able to help police with their enquiries are asked to call Staple Hill CID on 0845 456 7000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. We never ask your name or trace call.
