Police have stepped up their efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour at the Mundy playing fields in Thornbury after an 11-year-old boy was injured by a bottle.

The boy was at the Mundy playing fields with friends at about 6pm on Friday June 25 2010 when a bottle hit him on the head. He needed hospital treatment for a half-inch cut.

Investigating officers arrested a 16-year-old boy the next day and he was bailed pending further enquiries.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Louise Boyce said: "Anti-social behaviour at the playing fields has been a recurring problem during summer months. Neighbourhood police have stepped up patrols of the area at the key times.

"We have also been working with South Gloucestershire Council and Thornbury Town Council to find other ways to resolve the issue.

"We know that alcohol is often a cause of anti-social behaviour, so we will also be running operations with the council to check that off-licences are not selling alcohol to under-18s.

"We will be going to go into schools before the end of the term to warn young people about what could happen if they get into trouble over the summer."

Police will contact the parents of young people found in areas troubled by ASB and if damage has been caused they could be arrested.

Council ASB officers and police and will target those believed responsible for the problems to get an Anti-Social Behaviour Contract or apply for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order in place.

PS Boyce added: "We will be holding street briefings to make sure people have the chance to tell us about the problems and to let them know what we are doing about it.

"Local people can really help us improve the situation by making sure they tell us about any incidents. I'd also ask parents to play their part to make sure everyone can enjoy this area over the summer. Young people should be able to meet their friends: but they must realise that rowdy, drunken behaviour and damage are not acceptable."
