DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited Bristol to announce that pensioners will be £15,000 better off over the course of their retirement, despite rising inflation and crippling cuts.

Liberal Democrat Mr Clegg was due to visit Bristol on April 8 but his trip was cancelled when South Gloucestershire Council told him he could not use Bradley Stoke Community School for the event due to election rules,

But yesterday Mr Clegg finally made it to the city and visited the Friends Life Centre in Bristol where he discussed pensions.

He said: “We are giving a triple guarantee to all people on state pension, that your state pension will go up by 2.5 per cent or inflation or earnings whichever is highest. Our calculations are that someone who retires today that will increase almost £15,000 over the course of your retirement.”

Pensions Minister Steve Webb, who is MP for Thornbury and Yate added: “In the spending review, lots of things were not affected, we kept free bus passes, we kept the winter fuel allowances.”
