Two men - seen behaving suspiciously in Thornbury - have been arrested in connection with theft.

The arrests came after a member of the public called police yesterday (Wednesday February 6) to report two men in a van behaving suspiciously in Thornbury and abandoning a dog.

The dog, a cocker spaniel, was found to have been stolen from Thornbury earlier the same day.

The van was later found by police abandoned just off the A38 in Rudgeway. Officers believe the van had been stolen from London and it contained tools stolen from Thornbury earlier the same day.

Two men aged 26 and 32 were later arrested in connection with the thefts and remain in police custody today (Thursday February 7).

Thornbury Neighbourhood Sergeant Victoria Lansdown said: "We are very grateful to the member of the public who called us after becoming suspicious of the behaviour of two men in a van. I'd always say that if you are in any doubt give us a shout."
