A Bristol woman has won a photographic competition which celebrates springtime at a local garden centre.

A photograph taken by Jackie Grose who lives in Horfield on Bristol's northern edge has been selected by the Manager of the Wyevale Thornbury Garden Centre as being his pick of the bunch in a competition celebrating spring. It wins her a £50 gift voucher.

"The winning picture just shouted springtime to me."

Jackie, whose husband revealed that she had once considered becoming a professional photographer when she was younger, is delighted to have won. She said: "The picture shows my parents' flowering cherry and I was lucky to take it when I did as just three days later the wind had blown all of the petals off!"

The competition was part of the centre's Spring Gardening Celebration which took place over the second half of April when there were special activities with experts available on selected days to give visitors complimentary advice on looking after their gardens.

Children were encouraged to take part in the celebration as well. Those who attend the centre and completed special activity sheets were given a free packet of seeds so that they can grow something themselves.

The event coincided with the Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) National Gardening Week, which aimed at encouraging everyone to get involved in gardening.

The Spring Gardening Celebration was one of a series of free events being organised at Wyevale Thornbury Garden Centre throughout the year on a number of different gardening topics.
