More and more people in Thornbury have said that they plan to hold a family firework display at their home this year rather than going out to watch one of the town's spectacular displays.

Thornbury has two main firework events taking place tonight (November 5th) the first one is at the Mundy playing fields and the second one at the nearby Chantry. Both events have been running for many years and both locals and visitors to Thornbury attend the events in their hundreds. Year on year it seems that more and more people watch the firework displays on the cheap by standing along the main road opposite the Tesco's petrol station as well as other nearby streets.

Last year a large number of spectators gathered around the Tesco petrol station to watch the display sparking safety fears for both motorists and pedestrians. Both events held in Thornbury are fundraising events so not only is it a safety risk but also has a large detrimental effect on the revenue generated by the events.

With companies such as Tesco's offering buy one get one free and three for two on fireworks it is hardly surprising that people are holding their own firework parties.

Local resident Claire Smull said "the cost of tickets to the Mudys is crazy, for my family we would be looking at more than £20.00 to get in then the cost of food and drinks, as well as the totally overpriced fun rides make it a very expensive night"

James Conner also from Thornbury said "the good thing about fireworks is that you can see them anywhere, why pay to go into an event from you can stand outside the gate and lookup"

If you are planning to attend the Mundy's then the gates open at 5:30 with the children's display at 6:30 and the bonfire lighting at 7:10 followed by the main event at 7:40pm. Jack FM will also be entertaining the crowds along with a funfair, food and drink stalls. Ticket prices on the gate are £3.00 per child and £5.00 per adult.

The other main firework display is at the Chantry where gates open at 6pm followed by fireworks at 7pm, the bar will also be open throughout the night and food will also be available. Tickets on the gate cost £4.00 per adult and £3.00 per child.

Please try to attend one of the local displays and show your support. Also if you take any photos then why not share them with other local people, you can quickly and easily upload your snaps to the thornburypeople website within minutes.
